These deliberately accidental objects are an exploration of contrast and ambiguity. Fine cotton and porcelain are used to create forms that appear to have the qualities of textile but on close examination are neither textile nor obviously ceramic. What is captured is a moment in the kiln where there is no outside control over the disparate tendencies of cotton and clay, materials that are recontextualized in their final presentation.
The subjective line between domestic and artistic life is a recurring theme in my work. In my artistic practice I attempt to blur that line by carrying over important activities from domestic life including sewing, gardening, and collecting. I am interested in the ambiguity that arises when we encounter an object whose material or function is familiar but is seen outside of its usual context. |
